Swimming:
Certain breeds,
such as retrievers, take to swimming more naturally than others. The key to encouraging the dog to swim is to
accustom the dog to the water gradually and to make it a pleasant experience. Avoid anything that could accidentally
traumatize the dog. A hot day, a quiet
spot, a shallow beach or wading-pool, some fun toys, and human (or canine)
companions willing to enter the water are often all that it takes to convince a
dog to give it a try. You can also try
floating some treats such as Cheerios in the shallows to coax a food-oriented
dog at first to enter the water. Here’s
another situation where you will be grateful you have taught “find it!” Please
be aware that some breeds, such as front-heavy bulldogs, are not good swimmers.
Check about your breed before allowing the dog to wade in over his neck!
